Enigma Releasing acquired the Belgian rights to Two Prosecutors from sales agent Coproduction Office after making an offer during the Cannes Marché du Film earlier this year. It will handle the local rollout, with its colleagues at Pyramid distributing the film France, where it is set for a November 5 release. This coordinated cross-border push clearly marks an exceedingly rare momentum play for a new indie distributor, positioning upstart company Enigma as an agile and swift-acting agent with international reach.

CEO Julien Kerknawi previously garnered a lot of press attention with The Last Front, a WWI feature starring Iain Glen (Game of Thrones), which he both co-wrote and directed. Although the film was plagued with financing and post-production setbacks, Kerknawi still managed to steer it to completion. Last year, The Last Front was eventually released theatrically in the U.S. and the UK, with digital covered by Quiver (North America) and Altitude (UK), as well as additional deals secured in Australia and other territories. Variety praised the film as a ‘gritty anti-war drama’, marking Kerknawi’s entry into the international marketplace.

Needing to overcome a significant series of obstacles while making The Last Front made for a significant learning experience for the Belgian filmmaker, forging the scars and business insights that seem to be behind his pivot from filmmaker to distributor. With more experience as a writer, director, and now distributor under his belt, Kerknawi is now poised to lead Enigma into the rare territory that sits between the explored but stale and the unknown but unpredictable… so stay tuned!

About Two Prosecutors

Year: 1937. Place: The Soviet Union.

The Russian NKVD (People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs – the secret police and forerunner of the KGB), acting on the orders of authoritarian leader Stalin, is carrying out a dehumanizing campaign that would later become known as the Great Purge. Alleged dissidents are imprisoned without trial, their confessions literally beaten out of them.

When the young, idealistic prosecutor Kornyev (powerfully portrayed by Alexander Kuznetsov) receives an anonymous letter exposing the abuses committed by the secret police, he embarks on a crusade to prove that the stories are nothing more than local rumors. Gradually, however, he discovers to his horror that there is much more at stake, and he begins to question his loyalty to the Party.

What follows is a claustrophobic narrative unfolding mainly in cramped cells, narrow corridors, and unsettling offices. Two Prosecutors has already been hailed by international critics as one of the most daring films of the year – a reputation well earned, as its story masterfully places the often outrageous events of recent years into a historical – and very dark – context.

Quotes

Julien Kerknawi:

‘I grew up with filmmakers who dared. After the storm surrounding The Last Front, I wanted to once again embrace the fearless side of cinema—not only as a director, but now also as a distributor. With Two Prosecutors, we set the tone right away: intelligent, daring, and full of moral urgency.’

Alexander Kuznetsov:

‘Two Prosecutors is about conscience in times when looking away is easier.’ Alexander is looking to sharing the film in Ghent and engaging with audiences about responsibilityboth then and now.
