The Setting
Tír Nascath is ancient – a land steeped in myth and legend, yet tainted centuries ago after the spectral legion of accursed death known as the Sluagh swept across the land. Entire villages, fortresses, and cities were razed in what would become known as the Bás an tSaoil – the ‘death of life’. Hundreds of thousands were slain or turned into Marvach – hollowed-out husks of their former selves, devoid of souls, and now wandering the land, driven by insatiable hunger and burning rage.
Those few who survived fled, seeking refuge behind the one barrier the Sluagh could not breach: the protective light surrounding the Golden Oak in the midst of Tír Nascath’s last great city, Céad Darach. Now, hundreds of years later, the secluded yet relatively safe lives of their descendants are in danger. The light of the Golden Oak is starting to fade. The shadows that hide the Sluagh are creeping closer to the city day by day.
The Golden Oak is dying.
In their wisdom, the city’s governing council of elders – the Fréavacha – have decided to quell the growing unrest in Céad Darach by allowing some bands of wanderers and explorers to leave in search of someone – or something – that can save the city. Unfortunately, their people have been isolated for centuries, and the only known maps of Tír Nascath show the region before the Bás an tSaoil. Still, the greatest hope may lie within the ruins of once-towering structures and the remnants of ancient civilizations that have long since disappeared.
Many more questions remain, such as what happened to the other Great Cities and how the light of their own oaks got extinguished, or which spirits and faeries may be encountered in places where the barriers between Tír Nascath and the Otherworld are weak. Many of these creatures can only be slain through very specific means or by using certain materials, while others can be tricked with riddles or require offerings that will appease them.

The Game
The original Dungeons & Dragons 5E version of Beyond the Woods, which successfully Kickstarted in March 2025 – getting fully funded in just 84 minutes and raising €208,799 – consisted of a two-corebook set and a lot of extras, all inspired by Irish mythology. Emmet Byrne, the game’s writer and designer – previously lead designer of the award-winning Cubicle 7 games Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound and Broken Weave – created an engrossing setting and campaign with a lot of extremely well-received rules elements that truly fit the exploration theme so ingrained in Beyond the Woods: intuitive and engaging inventory slots for equipment instead of calculating precise weight and comparing it to carrying capacity; resource dice to track hunger and starvation; and hexcrawl exploration using a customizable map with a sticker sheet to allow players to personalize the map as their characters explore the region and discover what has changed.
Now, Old Oak Games has partnered with Son of Oak Game Studio – the publishers of the acclaimed, award-winning TTRPG City of Mist – to publish Beyond the Woods as a Legend in the Mist game. The narrative-firstgame engine will fuel a completely unique tabletop game experience with new Tropes (such as Old Guard, New Blood, and Lost Spirit), more than 50 new Theme Kits (including Duty: Guardian of the Oak, Influence: Chieftain, Companion: Swarm of Ravens, and Uncanny Being: Púca), four new forms of magic (the mysterious power of the Draoi, the curse of the Werewolves of Ossory, the magic of the Morrigan, and new Rote spells), many new creatures (the keening Bean Sí, the blood-sucking Avartach, the relentless Dúlachán, and more), and six complete adventures. Also included are rules for building new Bastions, each with its own Theme Kits, and full Quests.

About Legend in the Mist
Legend in the Mist is an innovative tabletop roleplaying game built on the acclaimed narrative engine behind City of Mist, but completely reimagined for mythic fantasy. Instead of fixed classes, restrictive Levels, and rigid character paths, players define their heroes through evocative Themes and evolving Tropes that say more about their characters than just a collection of traditional stats and numbers. While the system emphasizes cinematic action and emotional stakes, the accessible rules remain mechanically elegant and offer enough depth and flexibility to adjudicate almost any situation in an adventure or campaign.
